My Week at the U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar

U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar

U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar

Little did I know that my overly inquisitive nature, and my love of Social Media, would get me nominated to attend the National Security Seminar at the U.S. Army War College! Long story short leading up to my nomination: our Army National Guard daughter was at AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Gordon. I met the Colonel of her Brigade, Colonel Stephen Elle, thru the admin of their Facebook page. Besides other similarities, we are both Minnesota Vikings fans! While my husband and I were at Ft Gordon for her graduation we met and chatted with the Colonel in his office. He mentioned the National Security Seminar and I was immediately interested! I honestly felt it was a huge long shot to be selected, but like I keep telling others “If you don’t try, you won’t know.” [Read more…]

What kind of LinkedIn user are you?

Rare

“I opened up an account but haven’t completed my profile, and don’t visit the site.”

The only thing worse than not having a LinkedIn account if you’re a professional, is to have a dormant one. If people see a dormant account they may think that is how you feel about your career or your business.

Seasoned

“I appreciate the LinkedIn platform, and respect the ways of using it properly. I try to only post important items; Like and comment on posts I find interesting, or are supportive of a colleague or business; and realize the potential to make important connections.”

Bravo!

Sit With a Stranger on the Bus

Beth, another Minnesota girl, and military wife, I met at our Seminar's BBQ dinner.

Beth, another Minnesota girl, and military wife, I met at our Seminar’s BBQ dinner.

This past week I was honored to be a New Member of the Army War College, at their National Security Seminar (NSS). More on the NSS and Army War College in my next blog post. There were many fascinating military and civilian students and staff, and fellow New Members in my smaller Seminar group. But equally interesting were those I met on the 30-40 minute bus rides to and from Carlisle Barracks and our hotel.

Picture your classic coach bus, with two seats on each side. Promptly at 7:00 each morning we are able to get on the busses. The same was true for the afternoons when departing for the hotel. We get on, and then there is a waiting time until the bus is full.

Most of us attended not knowing anyone else who was a New Member. Therefore you were most likely going to sit with a complete stranger on the bus, especially that very first morning. I chose to sit with Anne, aka Catherine as I found out thru one of her stories. [Read more…]

Ellen DeGeneres Breaks Twitter While Trying to Break Selfie ReTweets at Oscars

In trying to break the most ReTweets for a selfie, Ellen DeGeneres broke Twitter!  Well, for about 15 minute anyway.

During a very fun and personable Oscars broadcast, Ellen took the viewers back stage and into the audience for conversation.  She was also collecting selfies, and posting them to her Social Media accounts.  The biggest selfie was with her and 11 of her acting friends, in which Bradley Cooper had to hold the phone and take the picture.

As of this posting her RT count is at over 2.7 million…a record!

Top 5 Fashion Hits and Misses from Oscars 2014

Last night’s Oscar Awards was quite entertaining!  I loved seeing the variety of fashion, both the women’s and the men’s, but was surprised by the amount of super light pastels and creams.

I did this purely for fun, because I love fashion!  All of these ladies are incredibly talented, and beautiful by nature.

Five things brands can do to help them succeed in Social Media in 2014

Social Media icon collage

1) Stay active

It doesn’t take much time, 10 minutes goes a long way.

2) Be honest & sincere

Bullshit is easily noticed, and the smell lingers.

3) Talk to people, not at them

Engage, get to know your Fans & Followers; let them get to know you.

4) Try new ideas

Expand Social Media Channels, contests, different approaches to posts, etc.

5) Recognize that Social Media is a necessity, not an option

Make it part of your Strategies, and budget it into your Marketing expenses.

Baby It’s Cold Outside – It’s All Relative

Now that Winter is officially upon us, many of us are seeing a dip in temperatures, and some of us have snow along with it.  It’s quickly become a joke on the Social Media channels to compare what people’s definitions of cold is.  There are news reports from Californians being super cold due to temps in the 40’s.  For those of us in the Midwest, that would feel blissfully warm right now.  This is the temp we woke up to this morning, and this doesn’t include the windchill 😉  To other locations -15 may feel better than what they have.  Personally, once it gets below zero I’m not sure my body knows the difference.

What is your definition or degree of cold?

Facebook changes wording from Unfollow Post to Stop Notifications

While cruising thru my Facebook feed tonight I came across this adorable “caught ya” pic from my friend Aimee.  I left her a fun comment, but then wanted to unfollow as I knew lots of others would also have fun comments to make, and I would get lots of notifications.

I discovered that Facebook has now changed the wording to ‘Stop Notifications’.  Once you click on it the words ‘Get Notifications’ appear.

Facebook adds Notification for Scheduled Posts that are activated

Many times I schedule a post for one of my own business pages, or for a client’s page.  This week I noticed a newly added Notification when a scheduled post is “activated” – posted when scheduled.  I love this new feature!

Facebook finally adds a calendar to Schedule Post option

Facebook has finally added a calendar to it’s popular Schedule Post option.  This is long overdo, and will be widely received as a positive change.  Previously users had to go thru a series of drop-down menus for year, month, and date.  This was not only tedious, it also was touchy for errors, in making sure you had the corrected items highlighted for selection, and that you actually knew what the current date was, plus the date you were looking for.
